Each client in the network is also part of a DHT swarm. This DHT is used 
to store the mapping between a users tox id -> public ip address. It's 
this information that lets you enter someones toxid, get their public 
address and then connect to them.

So the voice/text/audio chat is done directly peer to peer. But you will 
also be connected to the global DHT network, and helping store and 
maintain those mappings that the network needs.

These explain the connections you see when you start the client.
