Hey guy's at the support for tox... could you chime in and help out with the advise... The scenario... Profile was created in Tox client on MS Windows7 machine and a person now trying to migrate that profile (including the Tax ID) on to Android phone. How can he execute this? If not a actual profile migration, but at least how he can use his Tox client on Android with the same Tox ID? Any info would be appreciate it. I can deal with migration of profiles on Linux platform, but how to do this between Win machine and Android phone, I got no idea. Thank you. This DHT is used to store the mapping between a users tox id -> public ip address. It's this information that lets you enter someones toxid, get their public address and then connect to them. So the voice/text/audio chat is done directly peer to peer. But you will also be connected to the global DHT network, and helping store and maintain those mappings that the network needs. These explain the connections you see when you start the client. Canaries in general are useful and can flag for just about anything. Just because even the most comprehensive and vigourous search of Tox development resources would reveal no user information, doesn't mean the team has not been contacted by intelligence agencies with *other* requests or offers that might come replete with an NDL. Requests or offers that in no way feature a warrant for searches. The broader use of the canary device today is an NDL canary. This [non] notification "notifies" the public that the project has been served an NDL, which may have included anything from a search warrant to a demand for that one or more team members insert a backdoor or generally compromise integrity. Not that a whole lot could be done about this if it happened, but it is some small deterrent to gratuitous use of NDLs and a contributor to public awareness of their scale. gl On 2016-02-06 17:11, Gregory Mullen wrote: > The warrant canary was started by one person who didn't really > understand > the point of a warrant canary. > > Once he left the project the canary came down automatically, and no one > else wanted to put it back up simply because Tox doesn't have any of > your > data. That's one of the MANY reasons, we use git, it'd be seen by anyone and everyone, if anyone tried this. The resources that would be needed to make this anything but blatantly obvious, would also be the same that would be able to do something like this without a warrant. All a warrant canary does when you don't have data that's worth subpoenaing, is create a lot of extra work, and provide a worthless sense of security. I really believe that nothing is better than something in this case. But I'm willing to be convinced otherwise. Finally, if anyone at this point would be willing to write a warrant with non-disclosure language. There isn't really an SDK - toxcore (and build on top of it toxav) is a library that you can use to connect to & use Tox network. Note that "Tox network" is something that can be created even on LAN, without access to the internet. There are working wrappers for toxcore for ios and android. > 2. Does it have video/audio conference calling across multiple > users Yes and no. Currently there's no group video calling, only 1 on 1 A/V calls and group audio calls. Since current groupchats implementation is rather flawed, there's going on rewrite of them, and some people want to rip out the audio bit from groupchats, as soon as just the text communication will be ready in new groupchats. With that being said, it is possible to e.g. have multiple 1v1 audio/video calls - this could be used to emulate behavior you're looking for. - -- Kind regards, Zetok Zalbavar - ---- My Tox ID: 29AE62F95C56063D833024B1CB5C2140DC4AEB94A80FF4596CACC460D7BAA062E0A92C34 24A0 -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQIcBAEBCAAGBQJWwPh1AAoJEMlT04gCEgaKnMsP/RuV2atOqCkcscbm9uxpO3fw E1XxdRPGxKVM6mvWHVfylSkhSeMLnjk/0P/jhReeVKGRXZI/ASzuy4TEfyj5I3Xi zeqiVRtnLUSAxGBCLIaqQyRC6QAmN1qvTDO8TVckoFmjUiRnw7R7Z9uWw90HVScC Zm1XEVD6kyaBiIMyKr0fCIm81ptFaXFldZhlIwb/H9OrknPdrV0gbB0jqjUfQpl9 YiWxiMX09szPxJlY/SoCRic29YGSKv5Xb61yt+WWPles1jAvzHGDaR+9LKOHJ4uY VgG03gGN1ZT/g7LR4OcbkqlBvhyn4AkFynB18ZHgNsh51XNnCnsGiQ2/ogbv+udJ Vdwgon79AY8WDi9XQPg1Gpct9sOH/mGBr50LPRtFUbAzTsDCoWEBv7SDmYDzZmVW sESKdpcktd4P8MZRmTNsrSR5XEOFYSbTVAGMckpdLrA5P60Odij/BC/dsJ8upTIY q2/4HUy4aNGXvQUydvOmT2Pg2qhO48w7wur1cq2mrOtadMrv2ymAwMWU2nMsqbmy AcLDLCokgAIDBLfBwt/4HiQsiNhS6Z0rM+HAWZ9pnjgFoYyydQsVvKY66fhxmG4K 7ZEGrrMr9ZmyhGehTm15AAV62K2PyKy9pO3InhQBRvS40v3aaRnZmknxFxbJz1Gi sXKKOH2gtpxKU8R8lMwc =+1/i -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- From scar at drigon.com Mon Feb 15 02:36:32 2016 From: scar at drigon.com (scar) Date: Sun, 14 Feb 2016 19:36:32 -0700 Subject: [Tox Support] no packages in the linux repos? I don't know how likely that would be legally, but it seems plausible and may in fact be why public canaries in general never caught on in all the modern security projects. Thinking on this however, it occurs to me that private/secret/hidden canaries could be extremely useful; any number of tells could be employed. Even if only for developers, this could increase overall security. I guess I can also say that it doesn't matter whether real-world examples can be produced. Theoretical attacks and vulnerabilities are entirely legitimate. Paradoxically I will produce a real-world example: in a long term scan of tails-dev; you'll see them discussing (and often creating) fixes for theoretical vulnerabilities on a regular basis. gl On 2016-02-09 07:23, Gregory Mullen wrote: > Replies inline below > > On Mon, Feb 8, 2016 at 1:55 AM, wrote: > >> With all due respect (which is a lot btw), a "warrant canary" is >> different >> than a "canary". Your error indicates that code/program your system attempts to update is hosted by launchpad.net and is maintained by Canonical - the maker of Ubuntu OS. This error is absolutely unrelated to Tox chat client and has nothing to do with tox project what so ever. Now, why are you missing the tox.ini file - that is something no one would be able to tell you. Is there a chance you may have deleted it by mistake? In any way, run: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade to bring your tox client up to date and it may resolve your missing tox.ini file. To fix the broken ppa link to update google chrome, you would have to edit by hand: Place #1 - /etc/apt/sources.list to do that, run: sudo vi /etc/apt/sources.list Look for the PPA reference : http://ppa.launchpad.net/ne0sight/chrome-gnome-shell/ubuntu/dists/wily/main/binary-amd64/Packages and http://ppa.launchpad.net/ne0sight/chrome-gnome-shell/ubuntu/dists/wily/main/binary-i386/Packages and simply delete them. Once you deleted those two lines, save your sources.list config file and run: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade This should help with error messages and failed update/upgrade command for apt-get. Let me know if this makes sense... and if it worked for you. If you deleted the file, your gogole-chrome browser no longer will be updated when you run 'apt-get update' but that's ok. You can follow the guide how to install google chrome: http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppa/google_chrome?dist=stable Hope this help.... The missing ini file - hopefully guys from Dev team for Tox can chime in and help you to sort that one out. Damien. So let's start with your apt-get sources files configuration.... If you want to get rid of from Google Chrome... do you remember how did you installed in a first place? This matters because if you used apt-get to installed on your machine, the best thing to do (at least that's the way I would have done it) is to use: sudo apt-get remove google-chrome-stable && |sudo apt-get purge google-chrome-stable sudo apt-get autoremove && sudo apt-get autoclean that will do all the work for you automajically and it will clean up your source list config file. Now, if your removed Chrome by hand (simply deleting the files to "trash"), than yes, you would have left overs with references to ppa in your sources.list config file and you sould delete them from sources.list Now this is very important... The link you have mentioned on github - JFreegman... I don't know what that is and where did it came from. For your security sake, please use this link: https://tox.chat/download.html#gnulinux Follow the guide how to add the |"deb" link in to your sources.list file and they key.... All the steps are there in the instructions, I can confirm that it works the way intended. I use tox on my Ubuntu and Debian machines and all is well as far as installing the Tox using that guide. Take a look at the link, read it carefully, follow all the steps and you will have Tox client in your machine... I totally support your idea of not using anything Google related... and definitely no MS Skype if you can afford not to use it. Tox is not ready for a prime-time, but even tho it's still buggy and in active development, I use it and trust it way more than any other software from MS. Damien.
